Dyspraxia

Dyspraxia, a form of developmental coordination disorder (DCD) is a common life-long condition affecting fine and/or gross motor coordination in children and adults. It may also affect speech. Individuals may vary in how their difficulties present, they may change over time depending upon environmental demands and life experiences, and it will persist into adulthood.

An individual’s coordination difficulties may affect participation and functioning of everyday life skills in education, work and employment. Children may demonstrate difficulties with self care, writing, typing, riding a bike and play, as well as when participating in other educational and recreational activities.

There may be a range of co-occurring difficulties which can also have serious negative impacts on their daily life such as problems with memory, perception, processing, time management, planning and personal organisation, and social and emotional difficulties.

Although dyspraxia may be a difficulty which occurs in isolation, it frequently co-exists with other conditions such as Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD), Dyslexia, Language Disorders and Social, Emotional and Behavioural Impairments.

The causes of dyspraxia are not yet known though current research suggests that it is due to an immaturity or neurone development in the brain and manifested by a disruption in the way messages from the brain are transmitted to the body. This results in the inability to perform movements in a smooth, coordinated way. Those diagnosed with dyspraxia have no clinical neurological abnormality to explain their condition.
